FREE Professional training courses

As part of Enterprising Penrith, we are offering a series of completely free training courses for BID members. The courses are arranged in conjunction with local professional trainers and are designed to help you improve your business and stimulate growth as well as cover any areas you may feel are lacking or need a refresh in your business.

All the courses listed are free to your business and funded through Penrith BID. Each course runs over one full day, from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm at a venue in Penrith town centre. Two servings of tea and coffee will be provided but you must provide your own lunch.

The following courses are available to BID members in 2018/19:


This course is for anyone working in a catering or hospitality setting where food is prepared, cooked and served. It aims to raise awareness and understanding of food hygiene issues and will enable learners to fulfil their obligations under food hygiene regulations.  Each delegate will receive comprehensive course notes/booklet to take away with them. This one day course leads to the nationally recognised certificate, valid for 3 years and culminates in a short multiple choice exam.

Qualification: QA Level Two Food Safety in Catering (RQF) certificate

Dates available: 17th April 2018, 3rd September 2018, 5th March 2019, 10th September 2019


The objective of the qualification is to support those involved in the management of fire safety within the workplace. This includes managers, supervisors, team leaders, fire wardens (marshals) and staff working in any area where there is a potential risk of fire. Learners gaining this qualification will know that fire safety is the responsibility of everyone in the workplace and will recognise the causes of fire and common hazards. They will know the steps within a fire risk assessment and how to reduce the likelihood of fires.

Qualification: Highfield Level 2 Award in the Principles of Fire Safety (RQF)

Dates available: 23rd April 2018, 10th September 2018, 12th March 2019, 17th September 2019


Recommended by Health & Safety Executive, this is a minimum level of first aid training for the workplace, appropriate for low-risk environments or in addition to fully trained first aiders.  On completion, candidates become your appointed persons who take charge when someone is injured or falls ill, including calling an ambulance if required. Course is a variety of practical and theory sessions including CPR. This one day course leads to the nationally recognised certificate, valid for 3 years and culminates in a short multiple choice exam.

Qualification: QA Level Three Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (RQF)

Dates available: 30th April 2018, 17th September 2018, 19th March 2019, 2nd April 2019, 24th September 2019


This qualification is aimed at anyone who wishes to work in licensed premises where alcohol is sold. You will look at licensing authorities; at the responsibilities of the personal licence holder; police powers; rights of entry; specific prohibitions; strengths of alcoholic drinks; responsible retail of alcohol; and the protection of children from harm. On completion of this course, candidates will hold a licensing qualification with which they can apply for the Personal Licence. Anyone who authorises the sale of alcohol to the public (as per the legal requirement in England and Wales) is required to have a suitable qualification.

Qualification: BIIAB Level 2 Award for Personal Licence Holders (QCF)

Dates available: Wednesday 19th June 2019 PLEASE NOTE THIS COURSE WILL RUN FROM 9.30AM to 5.00PM AND WILL INCLUDE AN EXAM.

Social Media Socials

We’re hosting a Social Media Social.  This is a small, friendly group where you can ask questions pertinent to your business. 

Run by a social media expert, they’ll take place between 5.30pm -7.30pm.

They’re intended as a friendly introduction to Social Media. Dates are already set for 16 May and 13 June at the EVAN Gallery and Studios, Corney Place.
